2 Ways To Program A Transponder Key

Posted on

Transponder keys have gained in prominence over the past few years. They have become more popular because they provide an increased level of security for the vehicle. The reason why a transponder key is able to provide a greater level of security is because it has a chip inside that will send a code, made up of both letters and numbers, to the ignition of the vehicle. This code is unique to the car, so only the correct key will be able to turn the car on.

This makes the vehicle much more difficult to steal and the keys harder to duplicate. However, should you lose your key, there are two ways that you can reprogram a transponder key.

1. Program it Yourself

The first step to this method is to check your vehicle identification number. If your VIN starts with the number one or the number four, then you can reprogram a transponder key yourself. If it doesn't start with a one or a four, then you will have to move onto the second method. Once you determine that you can program the key yourself, put your car into programming mode. The way you do this differs for each car, so you will have to check your owner's manual in order to find out exactly how you do it.

After you turn the car to programming mode, put the new transponder key into the ignition and turn it to the "on" position. Leave it in the "on" position for precisely ten minutes and thirty seconds. After that, turn the key to the "off" position and wait between thirty seconds and forty-five seconds. Then, turn the car into the "on" position again and leave it in that position for another ten minutes and thirty seconds.

Repeat the previous step, turning the car off and on again. As soon as this has been completed, wait forty-five seconds, and then test the key. If the vehicle starts, then you have correctly reprogrammed the key.

2. Take it to a Locksmith

If you have a foreign car or it does not start with the same numbers mentioned above, then you will need to take the vehicle to a locksmith to have the key reprogrammed. This is a fairly simple process that can be completed. Make sure that you bring your owner's manual in case the locksmith needs it.
