3 Ways To Fit More Into Your Storage Unit

Posted on

After finding the perfect storage facility at a site like www.foothillsstorage.net, you might be wondering what you can do to get the price of your unit down. Because the typical 10x20 foot unit starts at around $95 per month, you might be thinking about renting a smaller space to save a little cash. Here are three ways to fit more into your storage unit, so you don't have to spend more than you need to.

1: Take Apart Your Furniture

Are you trying to figure out how to fit that big rectangular table into a 5x5 unit? Before you post it online for sale, consider taking it apart. By removing the legs and storing the tabletop flat against the wall, you can drastically reduce the amount of space that your table takes up.

Go through the rest of your furniture and break down each object. As you remove hardware like screws and bolts, store them in a plastic bag and tape them to the disassembled furniture. That way, tracking down the hardware will be easy later. Consider labeling each piece of disassembled furniture so that you don't mix it up later. For example, if you have a black kitchen table and a matching black coffee table, you might want to label those items so that you don't try to reassemble your coffee table with your kitchen tabletop.

2: Use Bookshelves

One of the most overlooked storage areas in any storage unit is the vertical space. Instead of breaking down those tall bookshelves, push them against the storage unit wall and stack them full of boxes and other stored goods. They can help you to use the entirety of your space, without bringing in extra furniture.

Remember to store heavier items on the lower shelves of the bookshelf. Putting heavier boxes on the upper shelves could make your bookshelf become top-heavy and fall over. To protect your bookshelves from scratches as people move boxes around, cover each shelf with a towel or some easily removable shelf liner.

3: Hang Items From the Rafters

When you think of your storage unit, think of it like you would your own garage. How would you normally keep your bike out of the way? Ask facility managers if you can use the rafters to hang irregularly-shaped furniture like bicycles or bulky garden tools. You might be able to get those things out of the way, so that you have more floor space for those boxes.

Renting a small storage space and using it wisely can help you to save a lot of money over the course of your storage experience, so that you can you can focus on paying for other things.
